Merlyn's is hosting a Warhammer 40k Kill Team tournament on Sunday, October 16th! Signups will start at 10:00. There will be a $5 entry fee that will be added to the prize pool, which begins at $50. Please be in the store before 10:30 to register.
This event uses special army list construction rules, taken from the GWS 40k Battle Missions book.
Each player chooses a 200 point force using the following organization restrictions:
0-1 Elite
0-2 Troops
0-1 Fast Attack
All models will operate as individual units, even if they were chosen as part of a squad or squadron. When a model shoots or fights in an assault, it may split its attacks amongst any eligible targets.
The Specialist Troopers special rule will NOT be in effect
No units may be held in reserve for these missions.
The missions will be attacker-defender format, and each round will consist of two games, with players taking turns as attacker and defender.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In drafting the missions I'm attempting to remain as close as possible to the fluff of the 4th edition kill team games. This means that some win conditions will be impossible to accomplish without infantry in your force. There may be one or more missions that allow players to achieve victory with full points without having any models left on the table.
Some general rules:
-Warhammer 40,000 5th Edition Rules will be used.
- Rules and Army Lists marked as ‘Trial’ or ‘Optional’ are not allowed. Unofficial rules sets are not allowed. In addition, the Following are NOT legal for the 40K Tournament:
Armored Company (Any Variation)
- Specific Zone fighting rules will NOT be in effect – Including Jungle Fighting or City Fighting.
- The models used in your army must be Games Workshop Miniatures.
- What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG). If you wish to use an item, it must be represented on the figure. Each figure must be fitted to the base supplied for the figure in its blister or box. Only Vehicles may be without a base.
- You must bring all materials needed to play including dice, templates, measuring devices, templates, models, calculators, and any rules that you will be using. If the Codex is available for your army you must have it with you at all times. You must also have the latest version of the FAQ for your army, available from the Games Workshop website. Each player should also bring at least 3 objective markers on 40mm bases.
- Each player must provide their opponent during each round a copy of their army list.
- All Tournament missions are considered ‘Standard’ for Space Marine Drop Pod special rules.
- In order to keep the Tournament running on schedule, when time is called for a round, all players must drop their dice and stop playing – no exceptions. Because of this, please be aware of the time left in the round and do not start a full turn you cannot finish. At a minimum, a 30-minute warning will be called by the Judge.
- If illegal units or Tournament rules violations are found in a player’s list, at a minimum, the models in violation will be removed from all subsequent play. Please check with Tournament judges prior to the event for any questions in advance.
- All rulings by the Tournament judges will be final.
- If a model is listed in an official GW Codex and it does not have a GW figure available for it, you may use an appropriate scratch-built model or conversion to represent it. Otherwise, you must use an appropriate GW or ForgeWorld model to represent the unit in question.
Games, Scoring, and Prizes
- There will be 3 rounds in the Tournament, with each round consisting of two one-hour games.
Schedule
The following times are subject to change.
10:00 – Doors open
10:00 – 10:30 – Set up, Sign-In, and Introductions
10:30 – 10:45 – Round 1 Table Assignments and Setup
10:45 – 12:45 – Round 1
12:45 – 1:45 – Lunch/Dinner
1:45 – 2:00 – Round 2 Table Assignments and Setup
2:00 – 4:00 – Round 2
4:00 – 4:15 – Round 3 Table Assignments and Setup
4:15 – 6:15 – Round 3

Merlyns is scheduled to close at 9pm, so lets please keep things moving.
The schedule is subject to modification. Please ensure that you are available to stay for the entire tournament.

I just had a quick question about the rule "All models will operate as individual units." Does that mean any model may be targeted with shooting attacks during the shooting phase, do wounds allocate to the squad or just on a per model basis? How do transports work? Can only one model from my troops choice ride in its dedicated transport, or can the whole unit?
Thanks, I look forward to your reply.

Much simpler actually. Since each side only has one squad, each member of the squad may shoot individually and be targeted individually.
With elites open though, probably gonna be a terminator-palooza.

Still want an answer to my question. If i buy a squad of ig vets and a chimera, how many of my models may ride in the transport, one "unit" (in this case one model) or the whole unit.

It doesn't say anything about dedicated transports. They haven't been allowed in previous iterations though. Guess it's up to the store.

Essentially, every model will be its own unit, so it will target and be targeted separately from any other model.
We're not adding any rules not listed here (unless they're modified under the scenarios) so multiple models embarking on a transport would be illegal.
Also a note: these rules require you to purchase units as written in the codex, which means whole entries must be chosen, even though the models will operate independently. For example, the minimum number of Tactical space marines you can field is four plus the sergeant, because that is the minimum available to choose from the codex.

Please note the rules change above. The scenarios I'm using are based on the kill-team fluff. You can field a single dreadnought as your team, but be prepared for short pointless games that you will lose.

Synapse rules in effect?
also... just "infantry" required for these special scenarios? not troops?

Yes, synapse is in effect.
And yes, just infantry. Jump infantry are also acceptable.
