I don't know how many of you here are reading Marvel's Incredible Hercules series. If you didn't already know, this series, written by Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente, has been getting stellar reviews since it first came out.

Don't just take my word for it:

Instead of going on about that, though, I wanted to talk about the onomatopoeia that is so ridiculously good that it has become a trademark of this series.

In case you forgot, onomatopoeia are the whacky words that act as sound effects in the comics, like WHAM!, POW!, and BOOM! In this title, though, they have ones that are not only much more imaginative, much crazier-sounding, but occasionally they even act as commentary on the action.

Here are a list of some of them, just from the back issues we have available at Merlyn's:

#113:
GWAM!
SKRUNK!
SHBRCH! (Wonder Man getting hit with a telephone pole)

#119 (Secret Invasion crossover):
QUAKTASHTAKRAKSHTAFRAKWOYM!!!
PABWUMP
GWANOOOOOME

#120 (Secret Invasion crossover)
WAKACHAKABOOM!!!
NA-COSBOOM!!
QWFOOSH!
GA-BLOIK!

#121
SWOO-BAKOK!! (Namora flying through an Amazon aircraft)
SHTUUUUP! (Amazonian rocket hitting Hercules in the face while he was trying to make a speech)
GRRRLPWRRRRROOOOOOM

#123
KRAKKINAJAA!
KRRJJTA-KRAKOOM!

#127 (Dark Reign crossover)
MAKKAMESS! (Herc tipping over a table in a diner)
RMMBLTYM

#130
ORCA-POWWW (Herc getting punched by Orca in the Underworld)
ABOMMINA (Herc getting punched by guess who?)
PAPAKRAK (Herc getting punched by his own father!)

#132
CAPSMAK (Athena hitting a harpy with her shield)
KRACKAHUMMMMAA (Herc hitting a giant troll with a Humvee)
KALLIKANTZAPOW

#136 (HercThor vs Thorcules) I won't even begin to explain these ones...
SHOKKAKAAAAAN
WHATAMANNNN
SUKKKAPUNCH
NURP
GODDATHUNDAAA
THORRRRULZ
GOTCHAGAAAIN
BRRRRZZZZAAAAM
...and I left out the two best ones.

Now, these fun "sound effects" aren't what the comic is all about. There is great superhero action sprinkled with a solid chunk of humor in each issue. Mythology buffs can find stories that touch on elements rarely discussed even in Marvel comics.

We have a number of back issues available and for those who are interested you can subscribe to pick up each new issue as it comes out.
