i was wondering if i should start playing mechwarrior, the only thing holding me back is not knowing anything about it! i was wondering a couple things.

1.how many books you need to play and how expensive they are.
2.how much is a mech and how many would i need.
3.how easily would it be to find an opponent to play at merlyns.
and...
4. is there anything else i should know.

Jeremiah,

well, first I would recomend going to a game and playing it first before you jump head long into game material. But I say this to anyone looking for a new crack habit.

1. You only need one to play Battletech (I assume this because Mechwarrior clicky has no real rule book).

The book is called Total Warfare and is the new core book. Sadly it is not out in general release yet. I happen to have a copy from Gencon and It was $40 but worth every penny. Much easier to use than the Master Rules book.

But I can combine 1 and 2 real easy. They will be coming out with a new beginners box set that has a rule book and a set of plastic minis. The rules book will be all you would need to play the basic game and get a feel for it before addin in the more advanced rules found in Total Warfare.

2. Cost of minis varies. 6.50-10.50 on average depending on the size and complexity of the miniature in question. The number you will need is negligiable since CBT is NOT a WYSIWYG game. All that is imortant are the record sheets. You can play with a quarter with an arrow pointed on it to denote what is the front and it would be tourney legal.

I would suggest atleast 4 though so you can play 2 on 2 games. There are beginner mini sets that are real nice and they retail under 30. I have been meaning to talk to Mr. Merlyn about getting some.

3. It shouldn't be too hard. We live out of town but run games occasionally. Usually on saturdays. We have been busy with summer lately but thats coming to a screetching halt soon. My wife is in the process of becoming a game rep for the area so we will soon have official story games and such at the store.

4. Not really other than the game isn't WYSIWYG and you will never be penalized in a game or tourney because a mini isn't painted or has the right Bitz.
