We get asked a lot by people coming into the store if we have any D&D 3.5, so hopefully, this straightens out some things.
Feel free to add anything after I'm done.
As my wife says, I'm not exactly "Mr. Facts".

First off, they don't make 3.5 anymore.
There, that will stop about half of you from having to read any further.
Honestly, they stopped making it years ago.

But here's what's happened.

A little company called Paizo was making supplements for Wizards of the Coast when they were printing things for 3.5.
A while went by and WOC said, "We're making another version. 4.0! It'll be spectacular!"
So Paizo said, "Hey, are you going to use that 3.5 system?"
"What?! No, no. 4.0. It'll be genius and everyone will love it.", Wizards said.
"Ya, but about that 3.5 system we made stuff for.", Paizo continued.
"Oh, that?", Wizards said. "You can have that. We won't be needing it. We're re-doing everything."

*may not have been exactly how it went down*

So Paizo went off and created their own system called Pathfinder.

It sold fairly well to a few people who were "in the know".
Meanwhile, across town, Wizards released 4.0

and, well.....
Do you remember that scene in Frankenstein when everyone apparently owned their own torches and pitchforks?

Don't get me wrong. Some people really enjoyed it.
But there were some who did not.
So as people bought 4.0, then quickly returned it like they'd found live roaches in the box, they wanted to find something else in the fantasy category to play.

Behold, the Pathfinder rebellion had begun.

As people began to buy Pathfinder, Wizards found themselves in quit a pickle.
One of the ways out?
Reprint some books from 3.5 in the name of Gary Gygax.
DM's Guide, Players Handbook, Monster Manual.

But to be fair, it's for a worthy cause. Your purchase of one helps support the Gygax Memorial Fund—established to immortalize the “Father of Roleplaying Games” with a memorial statue in Lake Geneva, WI..
These books are still available here at Merlyn's for 10% off retail.

Now, I'm not saying 4.0 is bad. In fact, quit honestly, I've never played it.
I'm just going off customers words and reviews.
The best review I ever read that sampled the two systems was brilliant.

AD&D 4.0 is a game you play over the weekend.
Pathfinder is a system you play for months.

Nationwide, as of last year, Game Trade Magazine listed
Pathfinder as outselling AD&D 3 to 1.

But not to worry if you still can't make up your mind.

In January, Wizards officially announced they would be making D&D 5.0
According to an article published on, the goal of
the new system is to create a “universal rule set” that will take
elements from all previous editions to create a single system
that will unite players from across the entire history of the game,
and hopefully open their pocketbooks to buy the new rulebooks.
The goal of the new system is to allow gamemasters to choose
which sets of rules they want to use, thereby customizing the
game to their specific groups desires.

You can still get 3.5 books, but they are going to be used. Keep checking our used game shelves and our eBay store. (link is on the front of our website)

So there you have it.
In a nutshell for those that went right to the ending like fast forwarding a mystery:

No, we don't have 3.5 because they don't make it anymore.
Pathfinder is basically 3.5.
AD&D is on 4.0.
There will soon be a 5.0
Used 3.5 can still be found, but it's going to be pricey.

So until then...

Listen and read the 1940's adventures of Martin's Raiders

Watch The HANGAR BAY SHOW - It's not the nerd-cast you deserve, it's the one you need!

It seems there is a typo there. You said one of the ways out for WoTC was to reprint some D&D 3.5e books in the name of Gary Gygax... but AFAIK Gygax stopped working on D&D even by AD&D 2nd ed. (after which came 'D&D 3e')... the picture is of an AD&D 1st ed. book reprint that Gygax actually worked on the TSR printings of (before they made 2nd ed. and before WoTC bought TSR).
