This is the book section, so I figured this would be safe here.
Neil Gaiman = Mad Genious
I've only gotten to read American Gods, part of Neverwhere, and the first three Sandman, and I must say...I love this man. I truly do.
I must ask this: Has anyone read Anansi Boys yet? Or maybe seen Mirrormask? (Yeah, yeah, that's a movie, not a book. Humour me. *smiles and bats eyelashes*) Does he have anything else out there that I might overlook if I searched for him at say...Hastings? (only because that's easier for me to get to -.-' )
. .jen. .

Alright... I'll bite.
So I get an earful about this guy from about every fifth person that I run across in the Graphic Novel section of the store, but I have never picked up one of the books. I know... I have been aware of it's existence for something akin to eight years and have never read any, an act considered by many to an offense punishable by death.
However, in my defense all the fans who love him so much never say much more about the comics than "They're SO awesome!" So give me the gist of it. What makes this guy deserving of the hallowed title "Mad Genius". What exactly ARE his comics about?

The Sandman comics are indeed 'so awesome' because they take the idea of the Endless, god-like figures that aren't really gods, that reflect all sides of human 'nature' for lack of a better word. The stories are that of people usually battling things like Death, Desire, and Delirium (the cutest of them all!). He created whole worlds for them to abound in and BE in. It's like people know of them, without conciously knowing who they are.
Except for the few crazy scientists that try and capture them because of old books they read on the subject. (see: Preludes and Nocturnes)
American Gods, one of his novels, not comics, is very good because he combines the idea of gods, new and old, in present day and, for the most part, battling each other. That they walk among us, slowly fading out of power because people have stopped worshipping them as they once did. That they are, in a way, human. It's a wonderful story, and some poeple think it isn't charavter-oriented enough, because you don't really learn anything about the people, but I disagree, because it ins't so much the people you are getting to learn anyway. I find it to be on my Top 5 Books Ever for sure.
I hope this helps in some way. O.o
